The Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours operator runs open-top and enclosed-dome jet boats from Lewiston, NY (and Queenston, Ontario on the Canadian side) through the lower Niagara River. The whirlpool jet boats are powered by triple turbo diesel water-jet engines and race through the ancient Niagara Gorge, past Devil's Hole State Park, and into the swirling Niagara Whirlpool. This jet boat Niagara Falls experience is entirely different from the Maid of the Mist — instead of cruising near the top of the falls, the boat heads downriver into the gorge, getting passengers as close to raw whitewater rapids as any vessel legally can.
The awe-inspiring scenery on both the New York and Ontario gorge walls cannot be replicated from any rim viewpoint, and the captain and crew provide live commentary throughout.

The single biggest question first-time riders ask is whether to book the open-top Wet Freedom Jet or the enclosed Dry Freedom Jet — effectively choosing between the wet and dry tours from the same operator. Both cover the same 45-minute route through the gorge, depart from the same dock, and cost the same price. The Wet Jet has open-topped bench seating on the bow — you will get completely soaked, especially in rows 1–4.
The Dry Freedom Jet has a clear dome over the passenger section that deflects the water, so guests stay totally dry no matter how rough the rapids get. These wet and dry tours use the same vessel and captain; the dome does not reduce speed or thrill. Choose the Wet Jet on a warm summer day when you want the full sensory rush of white water on your face.
Choose the Dry Freedom Jet if you have a packed sightseeing day ahead, are traveling with young children, or prefer to stay dry.

The jet boat route runs deep inside the ancient Niagara Gorge, a limestone canyon carved over 12,000 years by the gradual recession of the falls upstream. The most intense section is Devil's Hole — a stretch of Class 5 (also written Class V) whitewater rapids where the Niagara River is compressed between sheer walls of Lockport dolomite. Class 5 / Class V is the highest commercially navigable white water rapids rating (Class 6 is considered unrunnable).
The rushing current creates standing waves, hydraulic features and the turbulent boiling water that gives the Niagara Whirlpool its name downstream. The gorge walls on the Canadian side run through Queenston, Ontario; the US side passes through Devil's Hole State Park, New York. The gorge itself is 100–300 feet deep and offers scenery that no viewpoint on the rim can replicate.
International whitewater rating scales Class 5 as 'extremely difficult, long and violent rapids, steep gradients, large drops, requires expert skill.' For jetboating here, that means the vessel pitches sharply, takes spray head-on, and spins through the hydraulics at full throttle. The sensation is more like a thrill ride than a cruise. Passengers on the open-topped Wet Jet in the front rows will feel the full force of each wave — your clothes, shoes, phone and sunglasses will all be soaked within the first few minutes.
Guests in the rear rows get somewhat less impact. Each seat on the Dry Freedom Jet is behind the dome, so the thrill of speed and turbulence is identical but you stay completely dry inside the vessel.
US-side tours depart from the location in Lewiston, NY — 115 S Water St, 14092, the Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours dock on the Niagara waterfront. Lewiston is a historic village about 7 miles north of Niagara Falls State Park; the drive takes roughly 15 minutes via the Robert Moses Parkway North. Take the Lewiston/ARTPARK exit and follow Centre St down to the waterfront.
Free parking is available at the end of Centre St. You must arrive at least 45 minutes before your departure to register, sign the participation agreement, and complete the mandatory safety orientation. Late arrivals will not receive a refund.
Canadian-side departures operate from Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario (the Queenston launch point) under the same operator.

On the open-top Wet Jet, your experience changes significantly depending on where you sit. A seat in the front rows (rows 1–4) delivers the full blast of every wave — you will be completely soaked within minutes and stay that way for the entire 45-minute ride. Rear seats still get very wet but experience somewhat less direct impact.
Guests under 13 years old or under 100 lbs must sit in the rear rows, as must teens aged 13–15 unless accompanied by someone 16 or older. On the Dry Freedom Jet, every seat is equally comfortable regardless of position — the dome keeps all guests dry throughout the ride. Choose a front-row seat if you want maximum adrenaline and soaking; choose the back rows for a slightly tamer (but still very wet) experience.

For the Wet Jet, come dressed to get completely soaked — wear quick-drying clothes or a swimsuit, bring a change of clothes, a towel and water shoes or sandals (available to rent on-site). Secure lockers are provided at the dock. Leave laptops, loose cameras and non-waterproofed electronics in the locker — anything in the front rows has been known to go overboard.
For the Dry Freedom Jet, normal street clothes are fine; the dome keeps guests totally dry throughout. All riders on both boats receive a USCG-approved life jacket and a poncho before boarding. Ponchos and water shoes can also be purchased at the dock if you forget yours.
The jet boat season runs from late April through late October. Peak summer months offer the warmest weather for the wet jet; spring and fall still deliver full whitewater thrills.
Pack smart for both options — what you wear depends entirely on whether you're riding the soaking Wet Jet or the enclosed Freedom Jet dome.
There should be a bigger word than 'wet'! We have done jet boat tours before, but nothing as thrilling as this one — we were soaked. Captain Adam and Tori were fantastic, they made us feel safe, comfortable and confident. We literally considered going for a second ride. This was our family's favorite excursion.
You're gonna get wetter than wet but that's one of the best parts. Get ready to enjoy the rapids, the river, and the wild ride. Highly recommend this as a part of any visit to the Falls. 10/10!!!
The most incredible experience EVER! Captain Jason and Lexi did a great job — so much fun and so wet! I will repeat this tour over and over again, it's worth every dollar!
You get very wet — take a change of clothes and a towel. They supply lockers. You won't regret this! It's a blast.
Pick the open-top wet ride for a full soaking in the rapids, or the enclosed Freedom Jet dome to stay completely dry. Same route, same Class 5 rapids, same adrenaline — two totally different experiences.
Devil's Hole rapids in the Niagara Gorge are among the most turbulent whitewater in North America. Class 5 is the highest navigable rapid rating — the jet boat rides straight through at full speed.
Every vessel is operated by a US Coast Guard certified captain with a full trained crew. A safety briefing and USCG-approved life jackets are mandatory before boarding — adventure with full confidence.
Reserve your seat online with free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. Peak summer slots sell out weeks ahead — book early to guarantee your date.
Both the Open-Top Wet Jet and the Domed Dry Freedom Jet start at $73 per person, with discounts available for children. The Sightseeing + Jet Boat combo (guided Niagara Falls tour plus the jet boat ride) runs $138. Prices include the 45-minute ride, USCG-approved life jacket and a poncho — water shoes and on-board photo packages are available for purchase at the dock.
On the Open-Top (Wet) Jet Boat, yes — riders get completely soaked, especially those in the front rows as the boat plows through Class 5 rapids. On the Domed (Dry) Freedom Jet, the enclosed dome deflects all water, so you stay completely dry while experiencing the same thrills. The captain and crew run the same Class 5 rapids route regardless of which boat you choose.
The ride itself is approximately 45 minutes. Plan to arrive 45 minutes early for check-in, the participation agreement and mandatory safety orientation — budget around 2 hours at the dock from arrival to departure. The tour ends back at the Lewiston, NY dock.
There is no strict minimum age, but there is a minimum height of 44 inches (1.12 m) for Wet Jet seats — children are measured on-site. Guests under 13 or under 100 lbs must sit in the rear rows. Those aged 13–15 may ride the front rows with a guest aged 16+ and an adult chaperone (18+) on board. All guests under 18 require an adult chaperone (18+). Guests are not permitted to ride if pregnant or if they have heart conditions, back problems, or other serious medical conditions.
US-side tours depart from 115 S Water St, Lewiston, NY 14092. Take the Robert Moses Parkway North from Niagara Falls and use the Lewiston/ARTPARK exit — follow Centre St to the waterfront. Free parking is available at the end of Centre St. Canadian-side tours depart from Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario (Queenston launch point) under the same operator.
Both. Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours operates from Lewiston, NY (USA) and from Queenston, Ontario (Canada). The tours on this site are booked through the US-side departure at Lewiston — no passport is required to board from the New York side.
The jet boat season typically runs from late April through late October, weather and water-level permitting. Peak season is June through September when water temperatures are warmest — ideal for the Wet Jet. Tours are suspended when river conditions are unsafe. Check current availability when booking as exact opening and closing dates vary by year.
No — the jet boat route heads downriver into the Niagara Gorge, away from the falls themselves. You'll see dramatic gorge scenery, Class 5 rapids and the Niagara Whirlpool, but not Horseshoe Falls or American Falls. To see the falls up close, pair the jet boat with the Maid of the Mist boat ride or a guided sightseeing tour — both are available to book separately.
