The Dry Freedom Jet has a clear dome over the passenger section that deflects the water, so guests stay totally dry no matter how rough the rapids get. These wet and dry tours use the same vessel and captain; the dome does not reduce speed or thrill. Choose the Wet Jet on a warm summer day when you want the full sensory rush of white water on your face.

Choose the Dry Freedom Jet if you have a packed sightseeing day ahead, are traveling with young children, or prefer to stay dry.

The Niagara Gorge and Devil's Hole Adventure

The jet boat route runs deep inside the ancient Niagara Gorge, a limestone canyon carved over 12,000 years by the gradual recession of the falls upstream. The most intense section is Devil's Hole — a stretch of Class 5 (also written Class V) whitewater rapids where the Niagara River is compressed between sheer walls of Lockport dolomite. Class 5 / Class V is the highest commercially navigable white water rapids rating (Class 6 is considered unrunnable).

The rushing current creates standing waves, hydraulic features and the turbulent boiling water that gives the Niagara Whirlpool its name downstream. The gorge walls on the Canadian side run through Queenston, Ontario; the US side passes through Devil's Hole State Park, New York. The gorge itself is 100–300 feet deep and offers scenery that no viewpoint on the rim can replicate.

Class 5 Rapids — What to Expect on the Ride

International whitewater rating scales Class 5 as 'extremely difficult, long and violent rapids, steep gradients, large drops, requires expert skill.' Guests in the rear rows get somewhat less impact. Each seat on the Dry Freedom Jet is behind the dome, so the thrill of speed and turbulence is identical but you stay completely dry inside the vessel.

US-side tours depart from the location in Lewiston, NY — 115 S Water St, 14092, the Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours dock on the Niagara waterfront. Lewiston is a historic village about 7 miles north of Niagara Falls State Park; the drive takes roughly 15 minutes via the Robert Moses Parkway North. Take the Lewiston/ARTPARK exit and follow Centre St down to the waterfront.

Free parking is available at the end of Centre St. You must arrive at least 45 minutes before your departure to register, sign the participation agreement, and complete the mandatory safety orientation. Late arrivals will not receive a refund.

Canadian-side departures operate from Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario (the Queenston launch point) under the same operator.

Pick Your Seat — Front Row vs Rear on the Wet Jet

On the open-top Wet Jet, your experience changes significantly depending on where you sit. A seat in the front rows (rows 1–4) delivers the full blast of every wave — you will be completely soaked within minutes and stay that way for the entire 45-minute ride. Rear seats still get very wet but experience somewhat less direct impact.

Guests under 13 years old or under 100 lbs must sit in the rear rows, as must teens aged 13–15 unless accompanied by someone 16 or older. On the Dry Freedom Jet, every seat is equally comfortable regardless of position — the dome keeps all guests dry throughout the ride. Choose a front-row seat if you want maximum adrenaline and soaking; choose the back rows for a slightly tamer (but still very wet) experience.

What to Wear — Get Soaked or Stay Dry?

For the Wet Jet, come dressed to get completely soaked — wear quick-drying clothes or a swimsuit, bring a change of clothes, a towel and water shoes or sandals (available to rent on-site). Secure lockers are provided at the dock. Leave laptops, loose cameras and non-waterproofed electronics in the locker — anything in the front rows has been known to go overboard.

For the Dry Freedom Jet, normal street clothes are fine; the dome keeps guests totally dry throughout. All riders on both boats receive a USCG-approved life jacket and a poncho before boarding. Ponchos and water shoes can also be purchased at the dock if you forget yours.
